Chivas manager Matías Almeyda is leaving Chivas Guadalajara effective immediately, the Argentine confirmed to ESPN Mexico’s José María Garrido on Thursday.
Almeyda capped his stellar management career at Chivas by claiming the CONCACAF Champions League, defeating Toronto FC (MLS) on penalties after two legs.
Despite the outstanding achievement that will put Guadalajara into the Club World Cup, the run to the crown involved protests from players after a lack of bonus money was promised for winning the competition.
Almeyda hadn’t been convinced by the club’s offseason plans and reports came out that said the club organised the preseason without the manager’s consent.
When he took over the club in 2015, the club was still in relegation trouble and vowed to ‘awaken the giant.’
The former River Plate and Lazio midfielder lifted the 2017 Clausura Liga MX title, won two Copa MX crowns, the Supercopa MX, and the aforementioned CONCACAF Champions League title.
Almeyda has previously expressed his desire to coach the Mexican National Team.
