Matheus Cunha: Chasing Premier League clubs learn of release clause

Matheus Cunha's new Wolverhampton Wanderers contract reportedly contains a £62.5m release clause, giving his ever-growing list of suitors a clear price point in their pursuit of the prolific forward.

Cunha has shone individually despite the collective gloom encircling Wolves. The relegation-scrappers sacked manager Gary O'Neil in December and still sit just two points above the drop zone under Vitor Pereira's watch. Only two sides have conceded more Premier League goals this season, yet Wolves have outscored Manchester United and can match Aston Villa's top-flight haul - thanks largely to Cunha's contribution.

The club's record arrival has scored 11 league goals this season - not one of which has been a penalty - a tally only four players in the competition can better.

Such form attracted interest from the likes of Arsenal and Manchester United during the January window. Pereira was always adamant that his star player would remain at Molineux and after much speculation, Cunha eventually put pen to paper on a four-and-a-half-year deal.

The Telegraph claim that this contract makes the Brazilian Wolves' best-paid player and includes a release clause worth £62.5m (€75m) which can be activated as soon as this summer. If such a fee were triggered, Cunha would become the club's biggest sale, eclipsing the record haul of £54m which Wolves stand to gain from Pedro Neto's departure to Chelsea last August.

Arsenal, Aston Villa, Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur all expressed an interest in Cunha during the winter window, according to the Daily Mail. Now they know his price tag.

Pereira was unaware if Cunha's new deal included a release clause but admitted that he was "very happy" to have his talisman commit to the club. "We are better with him than without him," the Portuguese boss told reporters on Friday. "He is a player that can decide the game in the second. The team needs his leadership on the pitch and off the pitch as well."
