Valencia CF were defeated 1-0 by Deportivo Alavés on Matchday 36 of LALIGA EA Sports in a match played this Wednesday at the Mendizorroza Stadium. After an intense first half with chances for both teams, the home side took the lead through Joan Jordán, who converted a controversial penalty. Giorgi Mamardashvili was the standout performer for Valencia CF.
The match started at a frenetic pace, with both sides creating numerous dangerous opportunities early on. Luis Rioja, very active down the right flank, looked to break through and create chances in his return to Mendizorroza, while the movement of Diego López and Rafa Mir in central areas helped Valencia CF connect midfield and attack, pushing forward toward the opposition goal.
Although Valencia CF began with intensity, Alavés started dominating offensively around the 15-minute mark. From that point on, one name stood out above the rest—Giorgi Mamardashvili. The Valencia CF goalkeeper made several outstanding saves to keep the team's hopes alive in Vitoria.
First, he showed quick reflexes to stop a shot from Guridi, then made a fine save from a long-range effort by Tenaglia, and in the 21st minute pulled off a spectacular stretch to deny a powerful free-kick from Carles Aleñá. The Georgian goalkeeper was without a doubt the standout performer of a goalless first half that left everything open for the second.
Both teams tried to control the pace and build offensive momentum after the break, though the second half offered fewer chances than the first. Around the hour mark, Rafa Mir came close with a clever chipped attempt toward the far post, and head coach Carlos Corberán brought on Sadiq and Iván Jaime to try and shake things up.
EAlavés pushed forward with crosses from wide areas, but Valencia CF defended well, with crucial clearances from the backline and more key interventions from Mamardashvili. In the 75th minute, the game would take a turn when the referee awarded a highly disputed penalty for a foul on Mouriño. Joan Jordán stepped up and converted from the spot (1-0).
Iván Jaime had a dangerous chance to equalize, but Sivera denied him with an excellent save. After this defeat in Vitoria, Valencia CF will look to bounce back with a win this Sunday against Athletic Club at the Mestalla.
