Manchester City crashed out of the Carabao Cup after an embarrassing defeat away to Southampton on Wednesday evening.
The game at St Mary’s began with early Southampton pressure, as new signing Sekou Mara gave the hosts the lead before Moussa Djenepo doubled this with a chipped shot.
Despite several substitutions, the second half did not wield the result that City wanted, leaving Pep Guardiola’s side starring down an extremely poor defeat.
The suprise loss means that City have exited the competition for a second successive season, having won the trophy on the four occasions prior to this.
Pep Guardiola’s side started out on top with captain Ilkay Gundogan shooting wide after a fantastic move from youngster Cole Palmer.
Then it was the home side’s turn to attack as Stefan Ortega was forced into making two quickfire saves to deny Southampton from taking the lead.
Southampton also went close with Sekou Mara but his shot in the end was disappointing as he swivelled off balance.
This changed as Mara got a second opportunity to shoot mere moments later and this time the young player applied a wonderful finish to give the Saints a shock lead.
Things went from bad to worse as Southampton doubled their lead as Moussa Djenepo chipped Ortega, providing a eye-catching score line.
City were unable to break down the white and red wall and found themselves trailing at the break.
The first half horror show was evidently too much for Guardiola who opted to bring on Nathan Ake, Kevin De Bruyne and Manuel Akanji for Sergio Gomez, Cole Palmer and Kyle Walker to improve the second half.
Julian Alvarez almost provided an instant impact but saw his surging shot go just wide of Gavin Bazunu’s goal.
This still was not enough so City’s danger man Erling Haaland was hauled on in the place of Jack Grealish in an attempt to change the Cityzens’ fortunes.
A final substitution was then made by City’s Catalan coach as he brought off an underwhelming Kalvin Phillips for Rodri in a midfield change.
Alvarez went close again as the minutes ticked by but the Sky Blues could still find no way through the Southampton backline.
The next game for City is the much anticipated Premier League Manchester Derby away to United on Saturday with a kick-off of 12:30pm.
