Bournemouth made a strong start to their Premier League return with a win on the opening weekend, but now face arguably the division’s toughest test with a trip to face the champions.

Erling Haaland announced his arrival into English football with a match-winning brace at West Ham and will be wanting to add more goals to his tally against the newly-promoted Cherries.

Here is all you need to know about Saturday’s clash at the Etihad.

Form

Manchester City: W

Manchester City made light work of a difficult test at West Ham on the opening weekend, with Erling Haaland capitalising on a depleted Hammers’ defence to help himself to a debut brace.

The Norwegian won and converted a penalty to get up and running in the Premier League, before bursting onto Kevin De Bruyne’s pass to net a second at the London Stadium.

That combination is one that will likely be witnessed on more than one occasion this season, as one of Europe’s top passers and finest finishers work as teammates at the Etihad.

After defeat on the opening weekend last season, Pep Guardiola will have been pleased his side comfortably navigated a tricky trip to the capital.

Bournemouth: W

Bournemouth had been largely written off before a ball had been kicked this season, but upset the odds to secure an opening win against Aston Villa.

Scott Parker will have been delighted with the performance of his side, who showed determination and defensive strength to earn three points on their Premier League return.

A trip to the champions poses a significantly sterner test however, with Bournemouth having never beaten City in a competitive fixture. City have won the last 11 consecutive meetings between the teams, scoring 32 goals in the process.

The last time Bournemouth earned a result against this weekend’s opponents was during the 1998/99 campaign, with both teams in the third tier of English football.

Last Meeting

Manchester City 2-1 Bournemouth, September 24th 2020 (League Cup)

Pep Guardiola named five teenagers in his starting side the last time the two teams met, as Bournemouth travelled to the Etihad for a Carabao Cup third round tie.

Liam Delap marked his senior debut for City with the opening goal, as the forward latched onto Phil Foden’s pass before firing home.

Sam Surridge found an equaliser for the Cherries four minutes later, but a late goal from Foden secured City’s safe passage into the fourth round.

City went on to win the trophy, beating Aston Villa 2-1 in the final at Wembley.
