Olympique de Marseille’s updated Europa League squad for the upcoming knockout rounds will not include two of their winter recruits: Jean Onana (24) and Ulisses Garcia (28).
Both players have featured regularly for the club since signing for Les Phocéens in January but have not been included in Marseille’s updated squad list, and will not be permitted to play in the crucial play-off round against FC Shakhtar Donetsk.
Following the transfer window, Marseille like other clubs were permitted to update its list of eligible players for the Europa League by three players. The club has decided to include only two of their winter acquisitions, Quentin Merlin (21) and Faris Moumbagna (23), while Luis Henrique (22) was selected with the final choice.
The winger was recently recalled from a loan to Botafogo after struggling to find playing time in Marseille, but his return to France has seen a change in fortune. Henrique has become an essential piece to Gennaro Gattuso’s plans and has featured prominently since returning.
Pape Gueye (25) was unsurprisingly removed from the selection as his fallout with the club hierarchy continued. His decision to reject Marseille’s offers for a contract extension infuriated the club, as did his refusal to accept any offer at an early exit. Gueye will look to leave at the end of his contract in June.
