Marseille’s manager search: Hopes remain over Sérgio Conceição while interest in Franck Haise grows

Olympique de Marseille would like to announce their new manager before the start of June but there is a sense that the club may have to be patient. The reality of the situation is that this season has left the Marseille project far less attractive than the club hierarchy would hope with no European football and a squad in need of a dramatic overhaul.

The difficulties in their courtship of Paulo Fonseca who is AC Milan-bound and Sérgio Conceição who may yet remain at FC Porto have proven this. According to L’Équipe, both managers looked at the Marseille role and felt that it did not fit their ambitions of competing in the Champions League.

However, Marseille still hold out hope that Conceição will decide to take up the position after Taça de Portugal is played today. Especially since a new president at Porto (the ex-Marseille manager André Villas-Boas) could mean that his time at the club is on a short shelf life.

Les Phocéens have not ruled out slightly less prestigious names in their search for a new head coach, with AEK Athen’s Matías Almeyda and RC Lens’ Franck Haise still figuring high on their shortlist. Despite training not starting until the 1st of July and the season not beginning until mid-August, speed appears to be the keyword in the halls of La Commanderie.
