Olympique de Marseille midfielder Geoffrey Kondogbia (30) is set for a six-week long spell on the sidelines after sustaining a left knee sprain, according to a report this Tuesday from L’Équipe.
The former Atlético de Madrid midfielder badly fell following an aerial duel for the ball during Les Phocéens‘ 2-2 away draw at FC Metz this Friday. The Central Africa international had to be replaced before the hour mark by Jordan Veretout. Kondogbia’s start to life at Marseille is proving difficult. The first player signed by Marcelino’s side this summer was sent off during Marseille’s 1-0 away loss at Panathinaikos in the first leg of the Champions League’s third qualifying round. The Ligue 1 side were eventually knocked out on penalties in the return leg – with Kondogbia evidently suspended.
RMC Sport understands that club insiders had feared an even longer spell on the sidelines for Kondogbia, in the event that his knee ligaments were affected. Fortunately, medical exams showed it was not the case. Exams were undergone as soon as Kondogbia’s left knee had stopped swelling. Still, a near two-month absence is a big blow for Marcelino’s side. Les Phocéens will host on-fire Stade Brestois this Saturday in Ligue 1’s third matchday.
