According to a press release from Alexandre Rochatte, the Prefect of Loire, busses carrying Olympique de Marseille fans home from the Clermont Foot game yesterday evening were attacked as they travelled on the motorway back to the city.
Heavy projectiles were thought to have been thrown from a bridge at the eight coaches taking Marseille fans home as they neared the city of Saint-Étienne. It’s then alleged that some supporters exited the busses armed with baseball bats and attacked a motorist, leaving the driver injured and their vehicle damaged.
RMC Sport, reports that the police arrived at the scene of the incident, but the busses had already driven off in the direction of Marseille. They found evidence of broken glass, rubble, and mortar. The police were then said to have stopped the buses and carried out checks on the fans, but no arrests have yet been made.
Rochatte states, that he “deplores and condemns with the greatest firmness the violence and damage committed. These serious, unacceptable incidents, perpetrated on the sidelines of a football match between supporters on a main road, could have had dramatic consequences.”
It has been reported that Saint-Étienne public prosecutors have begun two separate investigations into the night’s incidents.
