Wolves midfielder Mario Lemina has expressed concern about the club’s chances of staying in the Premier League this season.

Julen Lopetegui’s side were beaten 2-1 away at Newcastle on Sunday – a result which leaves them just three points above the relegation zone.

And with just five points separating bottom club Southampton and 12th place as things stand, Lemina has acknowledged the difficulty facing Wolves between now and the end of the season.

“It’s going to be tough, it’s going to be really tough in the next few games because we are so close, from the bottom to just above us, but we’re just thinking about us, trying to win games to stay in this league,” Lemina told the club’s official website.

The Gabonese midfielder also feels Wolves were unfortunate in their defeat against Newcastle. Despite getting the game to 1-1, the hosts ultimately managed to grab a winner late on.

“Disappointed because we finally got it to 1-1 against them, but they’re honestly a really strong team who deserve to be where they are in the league,” he added.

“They were really aggressive on us, and we couldn’t handle it in the first half.

“Then we tried to change a little bit in the second half, but honestly they’re a really good team and we tried to do what we have to do, the plan, and we are disappointed because we could do better with the second goal they scored. Now we have to turn the page and try to see in front.”

When asked about possible areas of improvement, Lemina thinks possession is an issue.

“They are really aggressive, we should pass the ball quicker to make them run more and have more solutions in the middle because we could play behind the midfielders,” he said.

“We did sometimes and we had good chances, but it wasn’t enough.”

Up next for Lemina and Wolves is a home match against fellow strugglers Leeds before the international break.
