Manchester United suffered a disappointing 3-0 loss at the hands of Liverpool in the club’s final pre-season clash of the US tour.

Goals from Fabio Carvalho, Curtis Jones and Konstantinos Tsimikas were all Liverpool needed to hand Erik ten Hag and his players a huge reality check ahead of the upcoming 2024/25 season.

United had 47% possession compared to Liverpool’s 53% share of the ball.

Ten Hag’s men registered eight shots on target from their total 18 cracks at goal. Their bitter rivals had nine shots, with five of these requiring Andre Onana to intervene.

The Red Devils put together 455 passes with a pass accuracy of 83%. Liverpool strung 62 passes more with a pass completion rate of 85%.

United’s standout performer at Williams-Brice Stadium in Columbia, South Carolina, was Marcus Rashford. He started on his favoured left-wing position in an attacking trio also consisting of Amad Diallo on the other flank and Jadon Sancho in the striker role.

Rashford looked very sharp and was his side’s main source of threat.

During the 45 minutes he was on the pitch, the England international had 29 touches of the ball and successfully managed to find his teammates with 18 of the 22 passes he attempted, translating into a pass accuracy of 82%.

The forward tried to find a red shirt with three long balls and successfully connected once.

Rashford had three shots to his name, one was on target with the other two not really troubling Caoimhin Kelleher between the sticks for Liverpool.

The 26-year-old academy graduate embarked on three dribbles and completed all of them.

He also delved into three duels and came out on top on all three occasions.

Rashford endured an extremely underwhelming and disappointing 2023/24 campaign. However, in pre-season, he seems to be chomping at the bit and keen to redeem himself. Fans will definitely draw a lot of encouragement from his immense display against Liverpool even though the match ultimately ended in defeat.
