Bild reports that Hertha Berlin captain Marco Richter is set to return to the Bundesliga and have a medical at Mainz ahead of a move to the club.
The fee for the 25-year-old is set to be around €3m for Richter, who will sign a contract at Mainz until 2025. Richter had missed Hertha’s first training after their 3-0 loss to Hamburg as he had already made his way to Mainz on Monday evening, with his medical expected today.
Borussia Mönchengladbach, Köln and Ricther’s former club Augsburg had all shown interest in bringing Richter back to the Bundesliga but the winger will add versatility to a Mainz attack that lacks wingers.
Richter is one of the top earners at Hertha so the departure of the 25-year-old will free up funds to invest in a squad that has yet to win a game in the 2.Bundesliga after having played Fortuna Düsseldorf, Wehen Wiesbaden and Hamburg in their opening three games.
