Marcelino took charge of the Ligue 1 outfit as Igor Tudor’s replacement this summer.

But the well-travelled ex-LaLiga coach departs the Stade Vélodrome three months in despite guiding the club to third in the French top flight.

Fans aired their frustrations at the 58-year-old’s fledgling tenure following last weekend’s stalemate with Toulouse.

Marcelino also failed to reach the Champions League group stages with a 5-3 aggregate reversal to Greece’s Panathinaikos.

His confirmed exit arrives as Les Phocéens are engulfed in further crisis amid reports president Pablo Longoria has also considered his future. The Marseille figurehead met with supporters on Monday where RMC Sport claim “threats” were made to the Spaniard.

A Marseille statement read:

“Following the statement released last night regarding the management team, Olympique de Marseille believes that the events of September 18th do not allow Marcelino and his technical staff to carry out their role under suitable conditions for which they were hired.

“As a result of this regrettable situation, Marcelino and his staff will not continue the job they started at Olympique de Marseille.

“Given the circumstances, the entire club is extremely disappointed to face the departure of a coach and technical staff who arrived in Marseille on June 23rd and were fully committed to the club, due to non-sporting reasons.”
