Brazilian defender Marcao is moving closer to making his debut for Sevilla, according to Estadio Deportivo.

The 26-year-old joined the Rojiblancos this summer as Sevilla looked to reinforce their defence after Diego Carlos and Jules Kounde joined Aston Villa and Barcelona respectively.

However, Marcao is yet to make his debut for the Andalusians as he recovers from a hamstring problem he picked up during pre-season.

The Brazilian was recovering well and made the bench in the 1-1 draw with Real Valladolid in August but suffered another setback as a micro tear was discovered in his hamstring.

The injury kept him out for another four weeks. Following the international break, he rejoined the squad and took part in two consecutive training sessions without any issues.

Marcao is yet to be given the all-clear to make his debut, but he is getting closer to reaching full match fitness.

He will not play against Borussia Dortmund in Wednesday’s Champions League tie, but Sevilla supporters hope he will be available against Athletic Bilbao this weekend.

It remains to be seen if he will eventually get the chance to feature under Julen Lopetegui as the Spanish coach is in a fight to save his job.

Lopetegui has overseen Sevilla’s worst start to the season, and the fans are calling for a change in the dugout.

The former Real Madrid manager is on borrowed time. The midweek clash with Dortmund will be pivotal in deciding his long-term future.

A win against Edin Terzic’s side, who also need a response after falling short at FC Koln, could buy some time for Lopetegui.

However, his time in charge of the Nervionenses looks numbered, especially with the club already discussing possible replacements.
