With the football on hold at the moment, we’ve been thinking about who gets in Manchester United’s all-time XI.
Today we’re choosing the left-back.
Here are the nominees …
Dunne joined United from Irish club Shelbourne in 1960 and played 535 games over 13 years, which puts him eighth on the club’s all-time list of appearances.
Not only that, but he was a vital part of the sides which lifted two league titles, the FA Cup and the 1968 European Cup.
United spent just £5m on signing Evra from Monaco in 2005 and it looked like they’d been ripped off when he was substituted at half-time of his debut against Manchester City.
But the Frenchman quickly developed into one of the world’s finest left-backs and his eight years at the club yielded five Premier League titles, three League Cups and the 2008 Champions League.
And what a goal this was …
There could only ever have been one winner of this award.
The £650,000 Sir Alex Ferguson spent on signing Irwin from Oldham in 1990 remains one of the finest pieces of business in United’s history.
A consistently excellent full-back who took brilliant penalties AND free-kicks, the Irishman sits just behind Dunne on the club’s list of all-time appearances and his 12 glorious seasons at Old Trafford saw him win seven Premier League titles, three FA Cup winners’ medals and the Champions League.
As Irwin’s former team-mate Roy Keane put it on Sky Sports last October: “My god, imagine if Denis Irwin was playing now.
“He could play left-back, right-back, get you a goal, knew how to defend, never injured, a brilliant guy in the dressing room. Denis would be world class to me – and he’s a Corkman!”
Here’s how the team is looking so far …
GK: Peter Schmeichel RB: Gary Neville LB: Denis Irwin
Check back tomorrow and Monday when we will be choosing Manchester United’s greatest ever … centre-backs.
