Here are the nominees

3rd – David de Gea

De Gea joined United from AtlĂ©tico Madrid in the summer of 2011 for ÂŁ18.9m – a British record fee for a goalkeeper at the time.

The Spaniard won the Premier League title in his second season at Old Trafford and has so far made 394 appearances for the club.

He has also won the FA Cup, the League Cup and the Europa League, and been named the club’s Player of the Year on three separate occasions.

2nd – Edwin Van der Sar

Van der Sar was already 34 when he joined United from Fulham in 2005, but the £2m spent on him would prove to be one of the finest bargain buys in the club’s history.

The Dutch veteran went on to make 266 appearances in his six years at Old Trafford and in 2011, at the age of 40 years and 211 days, he became the oldest male player to feature in a European Cup final in the Champions League era.

That would prove to be his last professional game and he left United having won four Premier League titles, the League Cup, the Club World Cup and the Champions League.

And the winner is
 Peter Schmeichel

Schmeichel isn’t just United’s greatest ever goalkeeper, but one of the greatest goalkeepers the world has ever seen.

The Great Dane joined the club from Brþndby in 1991 for £505,000 – a transfer Sir Alex Ferguson would later describe as the “bargain of the century”.

He went on to help the club to three Premier League titles, three FA Cups, one League Cup, and the UEFA Champions League before leaving on the greatest of highs immediately following the 1999 Treble season.

Schmeichel will forever be regarded as a true United legend and even a short stint at Manchester City in the twilight of his career didn’t sully his greatness in the eyes of the Old Trafford faithful.

 right-back.
