This was revealed by reliable journalist Ian McGarry while talking to the Transfer Window Podcast on YouTube:

“Sergio’s brother has told them (Madrid) that Manchester United have been in contact,” he said.

The experienced centre-back’s current contract is set to expire in the summer and he is said to be unwilling to pen the new one-year deal offered by the La Liga club.

The 34-year-old has made an incredible 668 appearances in all competitions for Los Blancos since his arrival in Madrid, with 100 goals and 40 assists to his name.

He has also won 22 major honours, including four European Cups and five La Liga titles.

Facundo Medina interest

The Red Devils are also reportedly interested in securing the services of Lens’ talented young defender Facundo Medina.

According to La Voix du Nord, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side could make an £11 million bid to secure the signature of the 21-year-old.

Medina has been earning rave reviews for his performances in Ligue 1 this season, with the left-back making 11 league appearances and scoring one goal to date.

He is an academy graduate of River Plate but couldn’t earn his senior debut for the Argentine side and moved to Talleres in January 2018.

His performances landed him a move to Lens in the summer of 2020, but it looks that he could soon be on the move again.

Jadon Sancho’s signing possible this month

United tried to sign Borussia Dortmund star Jadon Sancho in the summer, but the two clubs couldn’t strike a deal for the 20-year-old.

Now, according to German football expert Raphael Honigstein, the Red Devils remain interested in Sancho.

But he also goes on to say that a summer move for the England international is more likely.

He told Sky Sports:

“So, no-one’s stopping United, if they went out, and felt really confident, to say, ‘let’s do this deal now, let’s make sure we get in now’. And maybe then announce it at the end of January. That’s inherently possible.

“We just haven’t seen or heard anything to suggest that they are indeed ready and willing to come back to that negotiation at the moment. I think everyone at Dortmund is under no illusions that the player wants to leave.

“But they think that the offers and the real negotiations will start closer to towards spring when clubs are perhaps in a better position to understand how much money they’ll have available for their transfer window in the summer.”

Sancho has been impressive for the Bundesliga side this season, with the winger smashing two goals and creating seven assists in 15 league appearances.
