Manchester United prefer Matheus Cunha over Xavi Simons for the attacking midfield role

Manchester United need a creative force behind the striker in the summer as much as a new No 9 based on this season’s form.

Amad is currently sidelined while Joshua Zirkzee picked up a season-ending injury recently. The Ivorian could be shifted out to wingback given the failure to land Geovany Quenda while the Dutch ace has often been played as a striker due to Rasmus Hojlund’s dismal form.

Given Alejandro Garnacho’s drop-off in form and Kobbie Mainoo’s uncertain future, another attacking midfielder has become something of a necessity.

But a lot will depend on the final transfer budget which will be hugely boosted should the Red Devils win the Europa League this season.

Among the options being eyed for the position are Wolverhampton Wanderers’ talisman Matheus Cunha and Xavi Simons of RB Leipzig. Both have been long-term targets for the club.

Cunha, Simons both targets

The Brazilian has 16 goals and four assists including a goal and assist against the 20-time English league champions in front of Ruben Amorim, who has sung praises of the Wolves ace.

As for the Dutchman, he has netted 10 goals while registering six assists and he is only 21 as compared to Cunha being 25. However, Givemesport have claimed that should United be in a position to splurge, they will prefer Cunha.

INEOS want someone who is Premier League-proven and the ex-Atletico Madrid ace certainly fits the bill. He also has a release clause in the region of £62.5 million which can be paid in installments, something that will suit United.

The former Paris Saint-Germain star is also expected to fetch a similar amount owing to the interest he is generating.

United prefer Cunha

“Manchester United are unlikely to make a serious move to sign RB Leipzig star Xavi Simons as they would prefer to lure Wolverhampton Wanderers talisman Matheus Cunha to Old Trafford if they have enough funds to tie up a summer deal, GIVEMESPORT sources have revealed.

“Manchester United are more likely to sign Cunha than Simons during the summer, according to GMS sources, with his Premier League experience being a key reason for the decision to prioritise landing him from domestic counterparts Wolves if they are able to stretch their budget in the coming months.”

Simons will need time to adapt to his new surroundings while he is still raw and both Amorim and the fans will be expected to be patient till he hits his stride.

As for the “sensational” Cunha, he can hit the ground running straight away should United manage to win the race for his signature. The club also have Bryan Mbeumo on their shortlist should things not go according to plan.
