Manchester United are playing hardball with Bayern Munich in the Premier League club’s pursuit of Matthijs de Ligt.

As reported by Christian Falk, United are willing to offer Bayern around €35m for the Dutch international. However, Bayern are still demanding €50m plus add-ons for the defender who is contracted until June 2027.

Negotiations between both clubs are ongoing with United still hoping for a better deal than coughing up €50m plus.

The reason United feel like they can lowball Bayern is because they know the Bundesliga side must sell in order to complete other transfers during the summer window.

As previously reported by GGFN, Bayern Munich honorary president Uli Hoeneß confirmed during a media roundtable that: “No more players will come unless two or three players leave first. Max Eberl and Christoph Freund know full well that no one will come unless some prominent players leave.”

Though this piece of honesty from Hoeneß may be appreciated by Bayern fans, it’s playing straight into United’s hands.

There’s no getting around it for Bayern, they know they must sell in order to buy and United will squeeze every Euro out of them in order to land de Ligt at the best possible price.

There’ll be a lot more discussions between both clubs but as it stands, United appear to be in a good position to land de Ligt for below the asking price.
