Manchester United players complain about Erik ten Hag’s intense training methods

Erik ten Hag is thought to have increased the intensity of Manchester United’s training in pre-season in attempt to achieve more with his current crop of players.

A poor start to the season has raised questions but it would be naïve to overlooked the amount of injuries Ten Hag has had to deal with this season, which is something I touched on in a recent column for BBC Sport. That said, you could also raise questions about the injuries themselves and how many could be deemed avoidable but we aren’t fitness experts.

According to The Guardian, however, a section of United players believe the team’s poor start to the season is down to Ten Hag overworking the squad in pre-season.

I would be slow to take the player’s word for it because we’ve had similar complaints about previous managers, so it just looks like they’re incapable of taking responsibility for their poor performances. They are now complaining of beginning the campaign feeling as tired as when they finished the previous one.

We must keep in mind that last season was a crazy one in terms of fixture congestion. The World Cup was played midseason in Winter and caused havoc for domestic leagues across Europe, so I think most players across the world can feel overworked at the moment. It’s just that lot in the United dressing room complaining about it.

What irks me about this report is how it claims none of the players have explicitly told Ten Hag of their concerns. They’d rather run to the closest journalist and tell them first? Well, if that is the case, it says more about some of our players than the manager who they should be rallying behind.

In turn, Ten Hag is being led to believe his players are fully committed. Yet all this tells me is that we still need to clear out a lot of players.
