Transfer insider Dean Jones has backed Fred to come good for Manchester United.

How has Fred done during his time with Manchester United?

OneFootball Videos

The Brazilian has enjoyed an impressive start to the season, with a decent WhoScored rating of 6.93 for the Red Devils, although massively helped by his goal against Leeds on the opening day, which was just his fifth in more than 100 outings for United.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's men haven't won a trophy since Fred arrived at Old Trafford three years ago, but he's more often than not been a starter under the Norwegian.

At present, Fred has moved above Nemanja Matic in the pecking order, whilst he's making the most of Scott McTominay's absence through injury.

What has Jones said about Fred?

Jones believes that whilst he often gets unfair criticism, he thinks United's strong transfer window could help Fred to improve with better players around him.

He told GIVE ME SPORT: "I think that people outside of United worry more about Fred than people inside the club. Everyone talks about United needing a defensive midfielder, but they've given every opportunity to Fred to prove himself and people seem to forget, Manchester City were bang in for Fred.

"He is a good player; you just need to get the confidence and the form out of him at the same time – they never seem to come together. But the team they've got around him now, they've got extra ability and they've got this season to see what they can get out of him."

Is Fred good enough to start?

If United want to become serious title contenders, then bringing in a midfielder on the same level as a Bruno Fernandes or Cristiano Ronaldo is badly needed.

Fred, Matic and McTominay are all decent midfield options, but none are considered at that elite level of a Fabinho, N'Golo Kante or Ilkay Gundogan for example.

Right now, though, Fred deserves to be starting regularly, but if United want to go to the next level, and start dominating once again, they'll eventually need to upgrade on him.
