When Manchester United signed Andre Onana last summer and moved on David de Gea, it looked like the club finally had a long-term, modern goalkeeper.

Onana was coming off a season where he was the finalist in the Champions League and earned plaudits for his world-class ability with the ball.

However, 48 games and 81 goals conceded later, some of which directly through his own fault, questions have arisen over his suitability.

Although he has been solid apart from the gaffes, those mistakes add to an already dysfunctional team and that is where United scouting for potential No 1 candidates comes in.

Spanish outlet Marca reports that United have Real Sociedad’s Alex Remiro firmly in their sights as they seek to jolt Onana into action next summer.

Remiro, who has 23 clean sheets this season, has also emerged as a bonafide international option for Spain.

His footballing education comes in the highly technical La Liga, which means he is good with his feet while his clean sheet record speaks for itself.

Remiro’s contract expires in 2027, so Sociedad might look to cash in on a player whose value is at its highest currently.

The report states that he has a €70 million release clause so United would undoubtedly have to engage in negotiations to bring that down.

Their path will be complicated due to the fact that there are multiple parties interested in his services, including Napoli, Inter, and Benfica, among others.

Ultimately, the club will have to take a call on whether splurging anything close to that would be worth the effort when Onana has shown glimpses of world-class ability and there are far bigger holes in the squad to fill.

As things stand currently, it doesn’t look like a deal the club should spend too much time over, especially with the figures involved.
