Manchester United are weighing up a January move for former Manchester City striker Edin Džeko.
That’s according to ESPN, who report that United are hoping to add attacking reinforcements to their squad in January and have identified the Roma hit-man as a potential target.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is said to want to add an experienced goalscorer to his ranks when the transfer window re-opens and ESPN claim Džeko has moved ahead of Juventus striker Mario Mandžukić on the United’s boss’s wish-list.
United reportedly came close to signing Mandžukić in the summer but the Croatian hasn’t played a single minute for club or country this season and the Premier League club appear to have got cold feet about resurrecting the deal in January.
Having scored 50 goals in 130 Premier League appearances during his time at City, Džeko’s experience of English football is perhaps also an enticing factor for United.
The club’s executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward is reluctant to sign players in their late 20s and early 30s but with United’s forwards all being in their early 20s, a short-term deal for an older player would make sense.
Whether Džeko would countenance a move to Old Trafford is another matter, however.
The 33-year-old has great memories of his time at the Etihad Stadium and is still highly thought of by the City fans.
Just this week, while on international duty with Bosnia and Herzegovina, he said: “I still hear the City fans occasionally singing my name, you know, and some write to me calling me a legend.
“It’s nice.”
