Contact has been made by Manchester United with the representatives of the outgoing Manchester City goalkeeper Stefan Ortega, according to reports.
Ortega, 32, is entering the final year of his current deal at the Etihad Stadium as Pep Guardiola and co prepare for the 2025-26 campaign off the back of a sub-standard year that saw them finish third in the Premier League with 71 points.
Hugo Viana has wasted no time in overhauling Guardiola’s aged, injury-riddled squad since replacing Txiki Begiristain as sporting director earlier this summer, marking his arrival with the departures of Kevin De Bruyne, Kyle Walker and Scott Carson.
City have made six first-team signings this summer, with Rayan Ait-Nouri, Marcus Bettinelli, Tijjani Reijnders, Rayan Cherki, Sverre Nypan and James Trafford all coming through the door to bolster Guardiola’s options for the upcoming campaign.
After a stellar summer in terms of incomings, departures are set to take impetus in what remains of the transfer window as Manchester City wait on the likes of Jack Grealish, Kalvin Phillips, James McAtee and Vitor Reis to find new clubs for the coming season.
Trafford’s arrival comes at a pivotal moment of the transfer window for the Blues, who will see Ederson retain the number one goalkeeping spot into the 2025-26 campaign – with Manchester City’s academy graduate set to begin his first season back as number two.
Bettinelli has replaced Carson as third-choice goalkeeper as Manchester City officials await a resolution on the future of Ortega Moreno, who is now expected to find a new club for regular opportunities amid interest from a wide range of English and German clubs.
Whilst on international duty with the German National Team in March, Ortega Moreno refused to rule out a summer departure from the Etihad Stadium when quizzed upon what the transfer window may hold for the former Arminia Bielefeld man.
According to the information of Football Transfers’ Robin Bairner, Manchester United have now made contact with the representatives of Manchester City goalkeeper Stefan Ortega to ask about his availability, contract situation, and willingness to make the move across the city.
While no formal bid has been lodged at this stage, the report indicates that the Germany international is open to discussing a potential deal at Old Trafford, but no final decision has been made by the 32-year-old.
It remains to be seen whether talks progress between Manchester United and Ortega Moreno, who is unlikely to have a shortage of suitors as it becomes more or less certain that this is the time for the Germany international to part ways with Manchester City after three seasons at the club.
City are understood to be done in terms of new signings in the transfer window as club bosses shift their focus on outgoings and contract talks with key first-team stars, with the 2025-26 Premier League campaign on the horizon after Guardiola and co reported for pre-season training at the start of the week.
