Manchester United are hesitant to match Newcastle’s €90m (£78.1m) offer for RB Leipzig striker Benjamin Sesko.
The two teams are in negotiations with Leipzig over the signing of the Slovenian striker. Newcastle are pushing hard to secure a deal and have increased their offer after having an opening bid rejected. The latest proposal from Newcastle is worth €90m including add-ons and is expected to be accepted by Leipzig.
Manchester United are hesitant to match that fee, while the Red Devils also want clarity on Sesko’s stance.
Flashscore are reporting that part of the club’s reluctance to enter the bidding war is that the outlay would impact additions elsewhere. Ruben Amorim is also keen to bring in a defensive midfielder and goalkeeper before September’s deadline.
While an offer for Sesko has not been ruled out entirely, United are assessing alternatives. A move for Aston Villa forward Ollie Watkins could be ‘revisited’, despite Villa’s insistence that the England international is not for sale.
It is understood that Juventus striker Dusan Vlahovic has also been offered to the Old Trafford outfit in recent days.
Newcastle are aggressively pursuing Sesko amid Alexander Isak’s uncertain future at St James’ Park. The Sweden international is keen to leave the Magpies following an approach from Liverpool.
Sesko is viewed by those at Newcastle as an elite forward prospect, with the 22-year-old having netted 39 times in 87 games for the German side.
