Uruguay have had an underwhelming Copa America but yesterday’s win against Bolivia will be enough to take them to the next round of the tournament.

This was their first victory after being beaten by Argentina and drawing with Chile.

Even though Uruguay have a star-studded striking partnership of Edinson Cavani and Luis Suarez, the team has collectively failed to create goalscoring opportunity.

However, Cavani played an instrumental role in securing vital three points for his national side.

His darting run forced the Bolivia centre-back to clear the ball but all he managed to do was to put it inside his own net.

The Manchester United striker doubled Uruguay’s lead by making another sharp run into the box.

Facundo Torres provided a lovely cross inside the box and Cavani was there to guide the ball past the goalkeeper.

This goal took his international tally to 52 goals, topping Thierry Henry’s 51 goal record for France.

Cavani got another great chance to find the back of the net but his strike was safely parried away by the shot-stopper.

Here’s how a section of United fans reacted to El Matador’s performance:

Not only the fans, but even United’s assistant coach Mike Phelan lauded Cavani’s goal in his tweet.

At the age of 34, he is considered to be in the last stages of his career.

However, he has shown that he still has the knack for scoring goals.

With 17 goals under his belt, he was United’s third-highest goalscorer this past season.

His stunning form at the latter half of the campaign persuaded the Red Devils to extend his contract for another year.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will be hopeful that the veteran striker can remain fit for the upcoming season as he looks to mount a serious title challenge.
