Manchester United find themselves in a crisis situation just three games into the new season despite spending north of £200 million on incomings.
United earned plaudits for their attacking display in their Premier League opener defeat at the hands of Arsenal.
However, Ruben Amorim’s men returned to old habits against Fulham, delivering a chaotic performance, bereft of any real attacking threat. And at Grimsby Town, the Red Devils plunged into new depths, exiting the League Cup in the second round.
Amorim has received a lot of flak for his tactical ideas. Still, the two defeats could be attributed to United’s goalkeeping department.
According to the Manchester Evening News, United players consider the League Cup exit to be “a new low” and “confidence is dwindling in their first and second-choice goalkeepers.”
A number of players are reportedly “uneasy about the goalkeeping situation.”
Against Arsenal, Altay Bayindir was given the nod to start between the sticks. While his distribution was promising, he lacked any kind of control in his six-yard box and conceded a soft goal from a corner kick. The Turkey international was targeted by Fulham during set-pieces as well.
On Thursday, Onana made his first appearance since the Europa League final defeat. The Cameroonian was culpable for both of Grimsby’s goals. During the penalty shootout, the 29-year-old made just one save from 13 attempts.
The fourth-tier side’s shot-stopper, Christy Pym, looked more comfortable and commanding on the night.
It is understood the club’s hierarchy are keen to shake up the department before the window closes.
United have held discussions with Royal Antwerp for Senne Lammens, but they face competition from Galatasaray.
Onana has attracted interest from his former club Inter Milan, but the Cameroon international is determined to stay at Old Trafford beyond the summer.
