Manchester United are facing a battle to keep hold of one of their most promising players in the final days of the transfer window.
Ruben Amorim handed Mainoo his first appearance of the season at Grimsby Town in the League Cup. The Red Devils suffered an embarrassing defeat but the Englishman delivered an encouraging performance and registered an assist on the night.
However, Amorim has underlined that he sees Mainoo as ever-present Bruno Fernandes’ competition in the middle of the park. As such, the 20-year-old is likely to return to the bench for Premier League outings.
Concerned with his playing time at Old Trafford, the academy graduate has informed United of his desire to leave before the window closes, as he targets a spot in Thomas Tuchel’s World Cup squad.
According to The Mirror, Mainoo has told United bosses he wants to join Napoli “on a permanent deal.”
The Italian champions are reportedly pushing to sign Mainoo in a potential £50m deal and a four-year contract is waiting for the player in Naples.
United have so far blocked the move but the dynamic midfielder is “adamant that he wants to leave” before Monday’s deadline.
The Mancunian giants sold Scott McTominay, another academy product, in a £25m deal to Napoli last summer.
The Scotland international has proven to be a phenomenal success in Serie A, leading Antonio Conte’s side to a league title. He won last season’s MVP award and has been shortlisted for the Ballon d’Or on the back of the prolific campaign.
Mindful of McTominay’s resurgence, United are determined to not repeat the mistake.
However, Mainoo is keen to reunite with McTominay as he believes Conte could have a similar effect on his career.
The Premier League giants have already reached an agreement with Napoli for Rasmus Hojlund. The striker is set to join the Partenopei in a loan deal including an obligation to buy.
