Manchester United came from a goal down as they went on to record a convincing 4-1 victory over Everton at The Leigh Sports Village this afternoon.

Ella Toone netted her 50th goal for The Red Devils as Marc Skinner’s side picked themselves up from last weekend’s defeat in the Manchester derby.

Whilst most eyes will be drawn to the FA Women’s Continental Tyres League Cup final later this afternoon, the Barclays Women’s Super League fixture between Manchester United and Everton opened the day’s proceedings. It has been a frustrating season for both Manchester United and Everton with neither side reaching the potential that many believe they are capable of.

Following a second-place league finish and an Adobe Women’s FA Cup final appearance last season, it appeared that Manchester United would finally cement their place amongst the elite, however, that hasn’t materialised this time around with many calling for a managerial change. As for Everton, although the spectre of relegation will have rarely crept into the thoughts of manager Brian Sørensen, The Blue Girls do still find themselves at the more undesirable end of the Barclays Women’s Super League table.

Despite their lower ranking in the table, it was Everton who took the lead early on at the Leigh Sports Village. A short pass from Maya Le Tissier gifted the ball to Katja Snoeijs. The Dutch international had the simple task of taking the ball around Mary Earps and placing her shot into an unguarded net. It was the last thing that Manchester United boss Skinner would have wanted with pressure already mounting on his position.

The hosts had the lion’s share of possession and territory in the opening half but they looked very inert in attack with only the one shot on target to speak of in the first 45 minutes.

Yet, The Red Devils came out looking like an entirely different team after the interval. Efforts from Geyse and Lisa Naalsund forced visiting keeper Courtney Brosnan into pulling off some decent saves as the hosts pushed hard for an equaliser. The goal eventually came in the form of a Millie Turner header when she got on the end of a Katie Zelem corner at the back post.

Just moments later, Manchester United had the lead thanks to Toone. After an initial scuffed shot, she was able to bury the ball into the back of the net at the second attempt.

Toone then got her brace to round off an electric period of play for the team in red which saw them score three goals in just eight second half minutes. A powerful driving run from Naalsund split the Everton defence and the Norwegian cut the ball back for her midfield counterpart who applied a simple finish.

The scoring wasn’t done there as Leah Galton marked her return to the side with a goal in stoppage time. The winger drilled a shot low and hard into the net and there won’t have been many more popular goalscorers on the day.

The match ended 4-1 in Manchester United’s favour as they secured a much-needed victory which will boost confidence going into the final weeks of the season.
