Manchester United have appointed Jason Wilcox as technical director with immediate effect after Southampton “reluctantly” agreed to his departure.

Wilcox will work with all technical areas of the football department to help achieve greater performance standards, as confirmed by ManUtd.com.

It was reported in early April that United had approached Southampton.

There will be more appointments to follow as Dan Ashworth is expected to assume the role of sporting director once he is taken off gardening leave at Newcastle. Insiders joke that Ashworth will have the best garden in the UK at this rate, but thankfully the situation with Wilcox was sorted quickly between United and Southampton.

Wilcox will report to the sporting director.

In January 2023, Wilcox resigned from his position as Man City’s academy director. He then moved to Southampton for the past nine months.

It’s believed City tried to keep Wilcox at the club following the work he did with Phil Foden, Rico Lewis, Oscar Bobb and Chelsea’s Cole Palmer. They all flourished under his guidance at the City academy.

Another interesting fact from Wilcox’s time at City is that he knows our new chief executive Omar Berrada, who will join United from City at the end of the season.

Meanwhile, United have also confirmed that current technical director Darren Fletcher “will continue to play a key role in the football leadership team working across the men’s first team and academy”.
