Across Manchester City’s 2-nil win over Chelsea, the best and worst of Manchester City’s dynamic winger, Jeremy Doku, was on full display. The Belgian international tormented the Chelsea defence throughout City’s opening weekend win. But at the same time, his final delivery was a source of frustration throughout City’s win. It seems that is the lot of Jeremy Doku at this stage of his career.

First of all, the best of Manchester City’s dynamic winger was on full display at Stamford Bridge. After a slow start to the game on the right wing Doku came to life when he switched to the left. He played a key role in Erling Haaland’s opener for Pep Guardiola’s side. Throughout the game, his ability to beat a man was crucial to Manchester City’s attacking play. As the game progressed and after Savinho was substituted at half-time Doku was a major threat for City on the left. He also looked to have improved his tactical awareness. It appears that Doku has learnt when to go and when to help his team maintain possession and control the tempo of the game. That was the good from Doku on Sunday.

Now on to the frustration of Doku’s performance. While Doku’s sparkling dribbling and pace were a constant threat to Chelsea’s defence, his end product was lacklustre. There were two occasions in the first half where a better ball from the dynamic winger would have set up Erling Haaland for two good chances. One was a cross in the early stages of the game. The other was a through ball that the Belgian international delayed in playing a through ball to Haaland on a City counter. There were more examples of this throughout the game. It is an area that Doku needs to improve in his game. It is something to watch for throughout the early stages of the 24/25 season.

The best and worst of Manchester City’s dynamic winger was on full display at Stamford Bridge. Despite this Doku was one of City’s best performers against Chelsea. If Doku can improve his end product he has the talent to become one of the best wingers in world football. It is only the beginning of the season but it is clear what the Belgian international needs to work on to take his game to the next level this season.
