FC Barcelona landed Joao Cancelo this past summer after the player endured a falling out with Manchester City coach Pep Guardiola.
The Catalan giants were unable to muster up the finances to sign him on an outright transfer but managed to acquire his services on a season-long loan.
With the Portuguese producing several top performances since joining, especially after his man-of-the-match exhibition against FC Porto, it is safe to say Barcelona want to extend the player’s stay.
Now, in an interesting bit of information, it seems Barcelona may end up benefiting from some new terms imposed upon Manchester City.
Indeed, as per Mundo Deportivo, Manchester City could be forced to sell players in the January market window after receiving “a reminder of urgent transfer priority.”
The Cityzens are facing serious Fair Play breach allegations on a total of 115 counts, which could land them serious trouble.
As such, the Cityzens must immediately make gestures that comply with “fair play”, reducing the threat of punishment as much as possible.
The report further argues that a decision about City’s purported irregularities may not come until the summer of 2025 when manager Pep Guardiola’s contract expires.

As a result, it may be imperative to take action now to avoid penalties or limitations later down the line. Talk has already begun regarding the potential sale of two current players, and Cancelo, who is already out of the club’s plans, may leave on cheaper terms.
Manchester City are understood to value Cancelo at €25 million, but €15 million is a figure more acceptable to the Blaugranes.
Barcelona director Deco and manager Xavi both think that the team should strive to sign Cancelo permanently. The player’s own desire to stay is also a key factor.
With information that Manchester City are facing financial restrictions, Barcelona may end up avoiding paying a higher valuation for the player.
