Girona could be on the verge of yet another loanee from Premier League champions Manchester City, with a deal for the summer of 2024 being reported.
That concerns the future of out-of-favour versatile defender Sergio Gomez, who has seen his game-time largely restricted since joining the club from RSC Anderlecht in the summer of 2022 ahead of the club’s Treble-winning campaign.
Despite offering his services in the wide attacking roles for Pep Guardiola’s side, and in central midfield, the large majority of his outings for Manchester City have come in the left-back position to varying degrees of success.
However, as a direct result of the increasing success of the likes of Josko Gvardiol and Nathan Ake rotating for the left-back slot at City, Sergio Gomez could find himself requiring an exit from the club in order to secure consistent game time and maintain development.
That move could take place in the coming summer transfer window, according to fresh reports, and with City Football Group’s close ties to top clubs across the globe, an easy route away from Manchester City may present itself.
According to the information of Manchester City insider ‘Tolmie’s Hairdoo’ on X, former Spain international left-back Sergio Gomez could join La Liga high-flyers Girona on a season-long loan during the upcoming summer transfer window.
Girona’s staggering form across the first-half of the ongoing La Liga season has seen the club emerge as a somewhat shock contender to claim the Spanish top-flight crown come the end of the campaign.
With 15 wins, three draws, and just one defeat to their name – form that is identically replicated by current leaders Real Madrid – Girona find themselves in second position in La Liga due to a slightly worse goal difference to the aforementioned Spanish giants.
The current Girona squad boasts a list of well-known and emerging talents, including Manchester City loanee full-back Yan Couto, whilst City Football Group’s Savinho is a stand-out talent while on loan at the club from ESTAC Troyes of France.
