After Coventry City’s incredible late comeback to beat Wolves in the day’s early kick-off, Manchester City took on Newcastle in their FA Cup quarter-final tie.
Here’s what happened.
Go here for Saturday’s Premier League coverage.
Scorers: Bernardo Silva 13′, 31′
Manchester City’s hopes of a second successive treble are still alive after they comfortably beat Newcastle to book their spot in the semi-finals.
A pair of deflected Bernardo Silva goals in the first half were enough to give Pep Guardiola’s side victory at a rain-soaked Etihad Stadium.
With Kevin De Bruyne out injured, Mateo Kovačić came into City’s midfield, with fellow Croatian Joško Gvardiol also starting at left-back.
Meanwhile, Jacob Murphy started at right-back for the Magpies in the absence of Kieran Trippier.
The hosts took the lead in the 13th minute, when a right-footed shot from Bernardo Silva took a wicked deflection off Newcastle defender Dan Burn and beat goalkeeper Martin Dúbravka.
City’s second goal came in the 31st minute. Silva was again the scorer and again his shot took a deflection, this time off Sven Botman’s head to deceive Dúbravka and find its way in.
Newcastle almost got back into the game when Burn’s knockdown presented Alexander Isak with a great chance, but goalkeeper Stefan Ortega came to City’s rescue with a top save.
The second half passed largely without incident or major chances for either side, and City’s name goes into the hat for Sunday’s semi-final draw.
Scorers: Aït-Nouri 84′, Hugo Bueno 88′; Simms 53′, 90+7′, Wright 90+10′
Coventry City booked their spot in the club’s first FA Cup semi-final for 37 years with an incredible late turnaround to knock out Premier League side Wolves
Stoppage time goals from Ellis Simms and Haji Wright saw Mark Robins’s side come from 2-1 down to win 3-2 at Molineux, after Wolves had also previously come from behind to lead.
The first big chance of the game came in the 27th minute, when Wolves wing-back Nélson Semedo got in behind the Coventry defence, but after cutting back from the by-line, neither Rayan Aït-Nouri nor Mario Lemina were able to apply the finish. Moments later, Semedo also forced a save from goalkeeper Bradley Collins.
Coventry then missed a gilt-edged chance to take the lead in the 35th minute, when first José Sá made a good save to deny Kasey Palmer, before Jake Bidwell found Simms unmarked in the six-yard box, but the striker could only skew his shot straight at Sá with the goal gaping.
The Sky Blues then had another great chance to score when Simms slipped Milan van Ewijk through on goal, but again Sá spread himself well to deny the winger one-on-one.
Coventry did take the lead early in the second half, and Simms atoned for his earlier miss by bundling home a knockdown from Liam Kitching at the back post. The goal was checked at length by VAR for a possible handball by Simms, but eventually it was allowed to stand.
The visitors almost doubled their lead in the 66th minute when Sá was called into action to deny Wright from close range, before saving again from Josh Eccles on the follow-up. Palmer then almost scored when Matt Doherty was caught in possession on the edge of his own box, but the midfielder’s attempted lob went just wide.
Wolves tried to force their way back into the game and went close to equalising when a powerful effort from João Gomes was tipped onto the post by goalkeeper Collins. They rattled the woodwork again in the 76th-minute, when Aït-Nouri headed onto the post.
Sá was then called into action again at the other end when he had to get two strong hands on Callum O’Hare’s long range strike, before he soon had to smother a close range effort from Kitching too.
But Coventry were made to pay for their profligacy when Wolves drew level in the 84th-minute. A cross from Gomes wasn’t cleared by Joel Latibeaudiere, with the defender cushioning the ball straight into Aït-Nouri’s path for him to finish on the volley.
And before long Wolves completed a stunning turnaround, when Aït-Nouri slipped Hugo Bueno in on goal, and the substitute kept his cool to finish.
But there was to be another twist deep into stoppage time, when a cross into the Wolves box was flicked on by Bobby Thomas, and Simms was in the perfect place to equalise for Coventry.
And the cup drama wasn’t done there, with Coventry soon scoring a sensational 100th-minute winner, as Simms laid a pass off for Wright, and the winger curled into the bottom corner to send the away fans into raptures.
