Manchester City could move for a right-back that Pep Guardiola wants but is there another option?

Article image:Manchester City could move for a right-back that Pep Guardiola wants but is there another option?

When looking at the current Manchester City squad the only position that appears to need to be strengthened is right-back. If City can sign a quality right-back they’ll enter next season with a complete squad for Pep Guardiola to utilise. That isn’t a knock on Matheus Nunes or Rico Lewis, but the Manchester City squad would look stronger if they could sign a top-quality right-back.

Now a new report has again linked City with a move for Flamengo’s Brazilian international Wesley. Wesley is an exciting prospect but he isn’t Premier League proven and would need time to develop as a player. Crystal Palace right-back Daniel Munoz has spoken of his desire to play for a bigger club. Perhaps Munoz could fill the vacancy Manchester City currently has at right-back.

Pep Guardiola reportedly wants Wesley at Manchester City.

Brazilian publication Terra has reported that Pep Guardiola has given City the green light to move for Wesley. Furthermore, Terra reports that Roma have agreed personal terms with the Brazilian international. But Roma are reportedly only willing to pay €25 million to sign Wesley. Flamengo are believed to be demanding €40 million to sell the dynamic right-back. It is also reported by Terra that Pep Guardiola believes that Wesley’s attacking intent, pace and strength could see him become a quality right-back in the Premier League.

As reported previously there is certainly merit to the idea of Manchester City moving for Wesley. He is an exciting prospect who is a weapon going forward from the right-back position. The Brazilian international also has all of the raw attributes both physically and defensively needed to become a quality right-back. But he isn’t the finished product, so to fill the right-back position, could City look for a Premier League-proven player? If that proves to be the case then Crystal Palace right-back Daniel Munoz could be a player that City could sign who is ready to go.

Daniel Munoz wants to play for a big club.

In an interview relayed by Sam Tabuteau for the Standard, Daniel Munoz has expressed his desire to play for a big club. Munoz had this to say when speaking on his future goals: “I want to play for the best teams in the world, but they haven’t spoken to me directly. I dream and work every day to achieve it, and I hope it can happen as soon as possible. I hope it’s in this window, but if not, I’m very happy at Crystal Palace.

If Manchester City wanted a right-back who could step in and immediately slot into the first team, Daniel Munoz would be it. His overlapping runs were a feature of Crystal Palace’s play last season. Munoz scored 6 goals and added 8 assists for Crystal Palace in 46 appearances last season. It was one of those runs that set up Crystal Palace’s winner in last season’s FA Cup final. Defensively, Daniel Munoz is a solid defender and that would be a welcome addition to Pep Guardiola’s squad. At 29 years of age, Munoz only has a limited opportunity to get the move to a big club that he craves. Perhaps the Colombian right-back could fill the vacancy that Manchester City has at right-back. It is unknown whether or not City have any interest in signing Daniel Munoz.

It would appear that Manchester City may be poised to move for Wesley to fill the void they have at right-back. But perhaps a move for Daniel Munoz could be the move for City to make. Munoz is Premier League proven and eager for an opportunity to play at a big club. Perhaps moving for the Crystal Palace right-back is a move Manchester City could consider.
