Recently Premier League side Manchester City are known for signing young talents and nourishing them into world-class players. They have now set their eyes on talented young Uruguayan striker Luciano Rodriguez, according to a report published in HITC.

The Citizens want to acquire the services of the Liverpool Montevideo starlet in the summer transfer window. However, multiple European clubs are also keeping tabs on the youngster, including Chelsea, who have been spending large sums of money over the past two seasons.

Luciano Rodriguez can be a future star

Luciano Rodriguez came through the ranks of Progreso and switched to Liverpool Montevideo in December 2022. He has featured in 38 games for them, scoring 11 goals. He was adjudged the Uruguayan League’s Young Player of the Year in 2023.

Not only at the domestic level but the 20-year-old is also establishing himself on the national front. He scored the winning goal against Italy in the 2023 FIFA U-20 World Cup and helped his country win the competition for the first time.

The striker also made it into Uruguay’s squad for the 2024 CONMEBOL Pre-Olympic Tournament, where he scored six goals in as many games. He scored a hat-trick against Paraguay and goals against the likes of Peru and Argentina. Despite his heroics, Uruguay failed to advance into the final stages.

Manchester City have no reason to sign Luciano Rodriguez

Manchester City’s intention to sign young striker Luciano Rodriguez doesn’t make much sense. They already have a goal-scoring machine in the form of Erling Haaland. Even for his backup, they have Julian Alvarez, who ran riot in the recent FIFA World Cup and emerged as one of the hottest properties in the footballing world.

It won’t make any sense for the Citizens to sign the Uruguayan attacker in the summer. They already have the services of world-class strikers. Instead, they can sign players to address other areas of the squad and fill the gaps if any.

Even Rodriguez would hesitate a move to Etihad Stadium as he won’t find enough game-time. It would be ideal for him to wait for a suitable opportunity and then make a move to Europe.
