In my opinion, if Manchester City were to sign a right-back it would complete the ideal summer transfer window for the club. Looking at Pep Guardiola’s squad the right-back position does appear to be a weakness of sorts. Matheus Nunes, Rico Lewis, Manuel Akanji, and John Stones look to be the best options for Pep Guardiola to utilise at right-back. Abdukodir Khusanov could play there but he looks to be better suited at centre-back. If Manchester City could sign a specialist at right-back it would set Pep Guardiola’s squad up for the 25/26 season.
It has now been reported by Jack Gaughan for the Daily Mail that Manchester City are unlikely to sign any more players this summer. If that proves to be the case, then City will enter the 25/26 campaign with what they have at right-back.
As per Jack Gaughan’s report, Manchester City have concluded their business in terms of incomings for this summer. So far, City have made six signings. Rayan Ait-Nouri, Rayan Cherki, Marcus Bettinelli, Tijjani Reijnders, Sverre Nypan and James Trafford have joined the club. Those players could be the only players City bring in.
It is also reported by Gaughan that City have had changes of heart in regards to their summer transfer business. Jack Gaughan cites Manchester City’s move to sign Rayan Cherki instead of Morgan Gibbs-White as one such pivot. So while it is unlikely that City will sign a right-back that could change if the ideal situation presents itself.
Looking at what right-backs could improve Pep Guardiola’s squad, there aren’t many standout candidates outside of Newcastle United’s versatile full-back Tino Livramento. But a City move for Livramento is currently off the table. There is no other standout player. The right-back market looks to be filled with young and promising players rather than proven performers. Outside of needing to sell players perhaps City have made a decision that none of the right-backs on the market are better than what City currently have.
It would seem that either Matheus Nunes or Rico Lewis would be City’s first-choice right-back at the start of next season. Manuel Akanji and John Stones may also have their run in playing the position. Those are Pep Guardiola’s options as of right now. All four players could do the job required at right-back. They may have to if Manchester City do not move for a right-back as Jack Gaughan reports.
