Aston Villa Women have been deducted three points from their current Continental Cup campaign for fielding an ineligible player.

The Villains included Noelle Maritz in their game against Sunderland Women on 24 January, which breached Cup Rule 8. 19.

The club have since confirmed that the points from their 7-0 away win over the Black Cats will go to their opposition.

The club said in their statement: “The FA have announced Aston Villa will forfeit their FA Women’s Continental Tyres League Cup tie with Sunderland.”

“Following the initial match on Wednesday 24th January, the Club admitted a breach of Cup Rule 8. 19 by fielding an ineligible player.

“The matter was then referred to Sport Resolutions UK for consideration by an independent tribunal.

“The consequences of the tribunal mean Sunderland have been granted three points while Villa have been deducted three points.”

As a result of this, Aston Villa will finish as runners-up in Group A behind Sunderland, and will progress as runners up on a points-per-game average.

This means that Tottenham will progress to the next stages of the cup while Manchester United are also eliminated from the competition as a result.

The draw for the quarter-finals will be made on Monday evening.
