Manchester United are earmarking Scott McTominay to play as their holding midfielder next season.

The Athletic is reporting that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer wants to mold McTominay into a deep lying defensive midfielder.

The Scotland international has mostly played as a box to box midfielder for his club.

And Solskjaer hopes veteran Nemanja Matic can mentor the 23-year-old on the position this season.

United had hoped to sign Jude Bellingham from Birmingham City, but he went to Borussia Dortmund instead.

They have signed Donny van de Beek from Ajax, but he is more of an attacking midfielder.
