Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim has confirmed the club have triggered the one-year extension clause in Harry Maguire's contract.
The centre-back had entered the final six months of his current deal but recently revealed his happiness towards early discussions over an extension, describing the situation as "positive".
While those talks continue, United have opted to trigger their extension clause to ensure Maguire cannot leave for free this summer.
"Harry Maguire, we are going to trigger our option," Amorim told assembled media before his side's Premier League meeting with Liverpool.
"I spoke with him this morning and I told him he has to improve on the pitch, we need him a lot. Also, he has to improve as a leader. We all know the situation that he had here but we need him a lot in this moment, so we are going to trigger, happily, the option for him.
"When you look at our team we are starving for leaders on the pitch. He is a leader, he has to improve that part, he has to improve his game, so we are happy to continue."
Amorim also confirmed Amad Diallo is "close" to signing a new deal. The young forward's current contract runs until the summer but, like Maguire, United can trigger a one-year extension if needed.
