Phelan, who was assistant under Sir Alex Ferguson, returned to the club under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

According to the Manchester Evening News, United are now discussing an ambassadorial role with Phelan moving forward.

Bryan Robson, Denis Irwin, Andy Cole and Wes Brown are among the club's official ambassadors as part of their pre-season tour of Asia this summer.

New boss ten Hag has brought in ex-United assistant Steve McClaren and his Ajax assistant Mitchell van der Gaag as his coaches.
