Manchester United are in contention to sign one of Spain’s best players from their 2024 European Championship-winning squad.

The Red Devils have already recruited Joshua Zirkzee from Bologna to bolster their attack this summer, but they are eyeing another versatile forward in the coming weeks.

According to Sport (page 4), the club are ‘positioned’ to land the signature of Dani Olmo, who has been heavily linked with a move to Barcelona over the past month or so.

RB Leipzig want €60 million (£51m) for the versatile attacker and have promised to facilitate his exit if the figure is matched with incentives.

Barcelona are yet to make an acceptable bid for their former graduate. Olmo is also attracting interest from United, who could pounce on the situation.

Olmo would be a risky signing with his injury record

The Spaniard had a brilliant European Championship with Spain. He started as a regular substitute but became a key starter following the injury setback for Barcelona’s Pedri.

Olmo ended the successful campaign with three goals and two assists in six appearances. He was brilliant in the final third, averaging almost two key passes per outing.

Despite this, United should avoid an approach for the 26-year-old. Olmo managed 13 goal contributions for Leipzig, but he played only 25 games in all competitions for them.

The forward missed 29 games for club and country with injuries. In the previous two seasons, he was sidelined for 39 matches.

The Red Devils had a bad experience with Mason Mount’s injuries last term. The Englishman struggled to make an impression but manager Erik ten Hag has backed him to come good.

Olmo would be a risky purchase with his injury record. With the huge outlay required to sign him, it would not be a good piece of business for the Red Devils.
