Malard show as Spurs pay price

Scorers: Malard 29′, 59′, Toone 51′, Ladd 84′

Manchester United picked up three vital points at Tottenham thanks to the talents of summer signing Melvine Malard.

However, things could have been very different if the hosts made the most of their six shots on target from nine after initially peppering the visitors with chances.

Mary Earps particularly made a big save to deny Martha Thomas before Beth England’s rebound was cleared.

Malard opened the scoring by redirecting a cross home and the former Lyon star brilliantly set up Ella Toone’s lob to double the lead.

Minutes later, she bagged a second of the night with a low drive outside just outside the box before Hayley Ladd piled misery on Spurs with her first goal of the season.

The result sees Manchester United sit fourth, four points off the joint leaders while Tottenham are sixth and now five games without a league win.

Arsenal make statement against Chelsea

Scorers: Mead 8′, Ilestedt 36′, Russo 38′, 74′ (P); Kaneryd 13′

A record crowd of 59,042 at the Emirates were treated to a thrilling top-table clash between Arsenal and Chelsea. Yet the reigning champions were left extremely puzzled as the Gunners put on a stunning display.

An early team move finished with Beth Mead cutting back on her left and rifling the ball home within the blink of an eye.

While a counter-attack at the other end saw Johanna Rytting Kaneryd equalise with a slow roller, that was all the Blues could put together.

Arsenal were extremely clinical as Amanda Ilestedt doubled things with a leaping header before Alessia Russo’s composed curler added a third.

To pile on the misery, Russo secured a brace after the break from the penalty spot, and it became the first time Chelsea conceded four goals in the league in five years (0-5 to Arsenal, 104 games ago).

Emma Hayes will wonder why Sam Kerr, Lauren James, and all five substitutes failed to impress in a match that will have a big say in the title race.

The result brings Arsenal level with Chelsea at the top of the table on 22 points. It was the Blues’ first loss of the season and the Gunners have not won the title since 2018-19.

Liverpool stunned by Bristol

Scorers: Haug 57′; Thestrup 50′

There will be mixed emotions at Prenton Park as Liverpool and Bristol splint the points on Sunday.

It was a first half to forget for both sides as neither displayed a finishing touch. Only one shot found the target from a combined five, courtesy of the Reds.

A flurry of action eventually handed the visitors the lead after the break. Amy Mae Rodgers nodded the ball into the box, and Abi Harrison’s shot was flicked in by Amalie Thestrup.

Sophie Román Haug, however, then pulled the hosts level with a header only moments later.

The theme from the first half continued throughout the final 30 minutes as things ended all square.

It’s two big points dropped for the Reds who sit fifth, while 11th placed Bristol earned a vital point away from home in their race for survival.

Everton condemn West Ham

Scorer: Holmgaard 63′

It took one moment of magic to decide this clash as Everton condemned West Ham to the relegation zone.

The hosts maintained the majority of possession but it was the visitors who had more shots (12 to 11).

A super-sub was needed to break the deadlock just after the hour mark as Karen Holmgaard proved to be the hero.

Her header hit off the ground and surprised goalkeeper Megan Walsh before trickling into the net.

The result means it is now back-to-back wins for Everton, who sit seventh, while West Ham still have only one win to their name and drop to 12th.

Brighton break Leicester hearts

Scorers: Terland 82′, 88′; Petermann 45′, Rantala 46′

Leicester were moments away from their first league win in over two months until Elisabeth Terland saved the day for Brighton.

It was a tense opening half between these two until one moment of brilliance broke the deadlock for the visitors.

Positioned just outside the box, Lena Petermann looked up and floated the ball into the top left corner with the Foxes’ first effort on target.

Things turned for the worse after the break for the Seagulls as Jutta Rantala doubled things within seconds of the restart.

It looked as though the hosts would drop three big points at home until Terland’s close control skills pulled one back, and a diving header six minutes later saw things end all square.

Looking at the table, Leicester sit eighth (three points off the top half) while Brighton are ninth (four points above the drop).
