Manchester United are in the market for a new backup goalkeeper as Andre Onana's current understudy Altay Bayindir nears a January departure, according to a report.

The Turkish number two moved to Old Trafford from Fenerbahce in the summer of 2023 and was afforded precious few opportunities under Erik ten Hag, making just a single appearance throughout the entirety of his debut campaign. Bayindir has made just three outings in this season's Carabao Cup, but after shipping four goals in a chaotic defeat to Tottenham Hotspur, United are no longer in the competition.

As the winter transfer window opens, Bayindir is thought to be keen on an exit in search of more regular first-team minutes. The 26-year-old had forced his way between the posts for Turkey's national team before he fell behind Mert Gunok in the pecking order after residing on United's bench.

With Bayindir on his way out of the club, United are in search of a new number two and three goalkeeper, according to Sky Sports Germany.

Tom Heaton completes the trio of goalkeepers which fill out United's squads, but the 38-year-old will be out of contract come the summer.

Beyond backups, United have also been reportedly scouting a new first-choice goalkeeper after concerns over Andre Onana resurfaced in recent weeks. The enigmatic - if, at times, erratic - Cameroon international has a below-average save percentage ratio this season, yet boasts an impressive record when the quality and quantity of shots faced is taken into consideration.

Nevertheless, United have been linked with Brighton goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen and are thought to be keeping tabs on Royal Antwerp stopper Senne Lammens. While Verbruggen is an established Premier League number one, the 22-year-old Lammens could be brought in as a serious challenger to Onana's position without immediately dethroning the club's current custodian.

If United are to strengthen in any position during this crucial winter window, they will need to sell before they can buy - as head coach Ruben Amorim was at pains to point out.
