If all goes to plan for Manchester United this summer, they’ll oversee a considerable revamp across the pitch to properly back Ruben Amorim following a quiet winter window.
The head coach is already navigating the second half of the term with only four out-and-out forwards at his disposal, while Lisandro Martinez’s campaign is also over prematurely after he suffered a cruciate ligament injury against Crystal Palace last Sunday.
Come June, Tom Heaton, Jonny Evans, Victor Lindelof, and Christian Eriksen will all be released from the club when their contracts expire. In an ideal world, United will also find a suitor willing to pay a sizeable fee to take Casemiro off their hands.
Replacements in the middle of the park will then be crucial for Amorim, and, according to TeamTalk, the board have already got one successor lined up in the form of Palace youngster Adam Wharton.

The 21-year-old was the talk of the Premier League following his breakthrough in 2023/2024, with his stellar efforts seeing him rewarded by earning his maiden England call-up last May, followed by his senior debut just two weeks later.
Unfortunately for Palace, Wharton was unavailable for around two months of this term due to a groin complaint, though he did make his return with a two-minute cameo off the bench in the dying embers of the Eagles’ win over United at Old Trafford.
It’s safe to say Wharton is highly regarded by plenty of ex-pros when he is fully fit, as he earned high praise from Three Lions legends Gary Lineker and Alan Shearer shortly after Palace’s 1-0 win over Liverpool last season.
“When I was at Blackburn, six or seven weeks ago, they told me about the transfer,” Shearer told The Rest Is Football panel.
“They said they had to sell him for obvious reasons. They felt as if Palace had got a great deal. They wanted to and needed to get more for him, but such was the need to sell. They said Palace got him on the cheap. I understand why today. I’ve been watching him, and he’s been really impressive.
“Today he was, without doubt, he ran that midfield. When you consider who he was against and the fact it was at Anfield. That’s a pretty big thing to say, but he was outstanding.”
Lineker chimed in: “What a performance, he’s so calm on the ball, he doesn’t give it away. He never gets flustered. He tracks back, gets forward, and he has a really good all-round game. He looks like a possible star for the future.”
