In a storyline that almost wrote itself, Real Madrid are one-nil down against rivals Atlético de Madrid after VAR controversy has stolen the headlines.

During what was an otherwise entertaining opening first half that showcased just how close the La Liga title race has been, Carlo Ancelotti's men will feel very hard done after giving up a penalty in the 34th minute.

Referee Soto Grado took a long hard look at the VAR screen before judging Aurelien Tchouameni to have tripped Lino in the box, but replays appeared to have shown that the Frenchman had beaten the Brazilian to the ball.

As jeers rang out around the Bernabeu, Argentine international Julian Álvarez stepped up to dispatch a panenka to put Atleti in front, bagging the penalty that Real Madrid has conceded this season.

But the home side could look to this as further evidence as their war with the RFEF rages on.
