Lisandro Martínez faces an “extended period” out of action for Manchester United.
The Argentina international reaggravated a foot injury he sustained in April during this month’s Premier League defeat at Arsenal.
He played through the pain barrier in the Red Devils’ next two matches against Brighton and the Champions League opener with Bayern Munich.
But Old Trafford chiefs have now revealed that Martínez is set for a prolonged spell on the sidelines as a result of the setback.
“Lisandro Martinez will be out of action for an extended period due to an aggravation of the foot injury he suffered in April,” confirmed a club statement.
“The Argentinian defender experienced the setback in our Premier League game against Arsenal earlier this month.
“Martinez bravely continued playing for the following two games against Brighton & Hove Albion and Bayern Munich.
“But it has now been determined that he needs a period on the sidelines for recovery and rehabilitation. Assessment is ongoing to decide next steps.
“Everyone at Manchester United sends Lisandro our best wishes and looks forward to him coming back as soon as possible.”
Martínez has made 51 combined appearances since joining from Erik ten Hag’s former club Ajax last summer.
