Ruben Amorim witnessed familiar concerns from the touchline in Manchester United’s Premier League opener.
United dominated the possession against Arsenal and registered more shots on target at Old Trafford, yet the visitors returned home with all three points.
Riccardo Calafiori pounced on an opportunity to score from close range after Altay Bayındır failed to push the ball away from the danger zone from a corner kick. That proved to be the only goal of the game.
Bayındır’s performance once again highlighted United’s goalkeeping issues. Absentee Andre Onana was equally unconvincing during the 2024/25 campaign.
United underlined their desire to sign a new goalkeeper in July by making a loan bid for Emiliano Martinez. However, Aston Villa turned down their proposal.
Now, Argentine journalist Gaston Edul, via the Youtube Channel 412, claims Amorim could not convince United to pursue a deal for the Argentina international with more intent.
“The deal was very close (Emi Martinez to Manchester United),” he said.
“The coaching staff, especially Amorim, wanted him and Martinez knew that Amorim wanted him. Amorim could not convince the United board that it was important to spend on a good goalkeeper.
“Well, they told him that Onana was there and said, ‘OK, we’ll do you a favour and try,’ and they offered a loan. Aston Villa made it clear under what conditions he would let him go for a sale.”
The 32-year-old remains keen on leaving Villa Park. However, it is unclear whether United would be willing to return to Birmingham with a permanent transfer offer for the 6’4″ star.
Recently, The Peoples Person relayed a report claiming United are considering intensifying their efforts to sign a new goalkeeper on the back of a disappointing defeat against Arsenal.
United’s pursuit of a high-profile shot-stopper may also hinge on Onana’s future. So far, the Cameroonian has shown a desire to continue at Old Trafford.
In recent days, Onana has been linked with his former club Inter Milan. The Serie A giants are thought to be interested in re-signing him, and there is a belief the 29-year-old would be “open-minded” to a return to San Siro.
