Man Utd collapse to Sevilla as injuries pile up

Scorer: Sabitzer 14′, 21′; Malacia 84′ (OG), Maguire 90+2′ (OG)

It looked like Manchester United would be in control of this tie, but two late goals from Sevilla kept things square 2-2.

A red hot Marcel Sabitzer found the net twice early on with a chipped effort into the net before drilling home a brilliant through ball from Anthony Martial after only 20 minutes.

Sevilla’s luck could have gone from bad to worse by the break too, when Erik Lamela’s yellow card for a challenge on Casemiro was checked for a potential red, but then dismissed.

Meanwhile, it wasn’t all bliss for the hosts. Bruno Fernandes also picked up a yellow in the first half and will miss the second leg, and Raphael Varane also went off injured.

Erik ten Hag would have loved to see his side put the game to bed, but the hosts took their foot off the gas. Antony’s long-range effort hit the woodwork, though.

And suddenly, despite registering zero shots on target in the first half, Sevilla arrived out of nowhere and piled on the pressure to ensure this tie wasn’t over.

Not one, but two own-goals beat David de Gea as Tyrell Malacia and Harry Maguire turned the balls into their own net. Adding to the misery, Lisandro Martinez was forced off on a stretcher through injury.

Unlikely hero sees Juve edge Sporting

Scorer: Gatti 73′

Over in Italy, Juventus welcomed Sporting to Turin and needed a little bit of luck to carry a 1-0 advantage into the second leg.

The visitors threatened a fair bit in the first half with more control of the game yet couldn’t find their scoring touch as Francisco Trincão and Marcus Edwards struggled.

Meanwhile, Juventus almost found the opener after a Sporting miscue at the back, however, Arkadiusz Milik and Angel di Maria couldn’t connect.

Named in the starting line-up, Federico Chiesa appeared well up for the challenge and let the attack for the hosts. Paul Pogba also played a role off the bench.

Just before the break, the hosts suffered a key injury blow as goalkeeper Wojciech Szczęsny was forced off for unknown reasons. The Poland international signalled issues with his chest before leaving the pitch.

The hosts picked up the pace afterward but still struggled to find their finishing skills. It wasn’t until late in the game that they finally broke Sporting down.

Only three minutes after coming off the bench, Dusan Vlahovic’s header was cleared off the line, but it fell to defender Federico Gatti, and he stabbed home from point-blank range.

A superb double save from substitute Mattia Perin in the dying moments then ensured Juventus held on to win.

Impressive USG hold Leverkusen

Scorer: Wirtz 82′; Boniface 51′

Union Saint Gilloise’s impressive run in the competition continued after taking the game to Bayer Leverkusen in Germany.

The visitors were well on top over 90 minutes in terms of attack, and it proved worthwhile in the second half.

Victor Boniface again ensured he was the man of the hour with his sixth goal in the competition to lead the scoring charts.

Yet Leverkusen’s bright star Florian Wirtz also managed to keep his name in the headlines and equalised just before full-time with a curling effort from outside the box.

The 1-1 result means it’s all to play for in Belgium, but the Bundesliga side would have wanted to put the tie out of reach at home.

Feyenoord make unlucky Roma pay

Scorer: Wieffer 53′

Inside a rocking De Kuip, Feyenoord managed to grind out a 1-0 win over Roma in their nervy quarter-final first leg.

The hosts had more control of the ball, but chances were few and far between, with the visitors looking more likely to open the scoring. However, luck wasn’t on Jose Mourinho’s side over 90 minutes.

First, Paulo Dybala was forced off with an apparent groin injury, and just before the break, Lorenzo Pellegrini missed his second penalty of the season after hitting the woodwork.

As a result, the first leg remained very much up for grabs, and Feyenoord fans were elated when their side found the breakthrough after seemingly out of nowhere.

Oussama Idrissi led a drive into the box, and his cross wound the foot of Mats Wieffer. His half-volley from range then beat goalkeeper Rui Patricio for 1-0.

And the theme of misfortune continued to follow Roma throughout the remainder of the match.

Tammy Abraham was next to be forced off with an apparent shoulder dislocation, and Gianluca Mancini’s effort was seemingly millimetres from crossing the line, but goal-line technology ensured it didn’t.

The result means the Serie A side have it all to do in the second leg at the Stadio Olimpico to keep their title hunt alive. Feyenoord, meanwhile, will be pleased to hold the advantage.
