Manchester United captain Katie Zelem has joined the PFA Players' Board, an elected position that she hopes will allow her to represent voices from the women's game.

Zelem replaces Manchester City skipper Steph Houghton, who has taken the decision to step down from the players’ union board, and will operate alongside WSL veteran Danielle Carter.

The 27-year-old wants to use her experience of being a captain that already represents voices within of players within her club and take it onto a 'bigger scale'.

"Often the people 'higher up' have not been through or had the same experiences we have and so myself and Danielle Carter try and put the voice, our opinions and our experiences across as much as we can for the female side of the game," Zelem explained.

"Obviously I'm the captain at Manchester United and I've had experiences with taking people's voices and opinions and taking it higher up. I'm in a really privileged position with my club where my voice is heard, and I can liaise with the staff to make change.

"I really wanted to do that on a bigger scale. Hopefully I can take the opinions of [players from across] the league and the other teams and try to improve the women’s game."

, Zelem had described herself as a 'players' captain'.

"I'm a player before I'm a captain so I want what's best for the team," she said at the time. "I've always got the players' best interest at heart."
